About Us

The Stone City Foundation, Inc. is made up of people who are enthusiastic about preserving the old buildings in Stone City. As you can imagine, the buildings are made of limestone that has been quarried right here in Stone City.. Some of it as long ago as the 1850s.

  Our plan is to renovate or restore as many of these buildings as we can through the use of   grants, donations, memberships in The Stone City Foundation and by selling tours to various tourism agencies.  If you would like to help, please find our information on the “Contact Us” page.  Some of the old buildings are beyond our help and will be identified on the “SC Places” page.  These “ruins” are of historical significance and information about these sites will be included in tour information.

We are a 501 (c) (3), nonprofit organization and nearly every penny goes toward the restoration and care of the buildings. The only other expense is promoting Stone City. 

Our Values and Ideas

Mission Statement: The Stone City Foundation designs, develops and markets historic tours of the area in and around Stone City, Iowa.  These tours are sold to bus companies, Chambers of Commerce, tourism agencies and private groups. It intends to expand its offerings by building and operating a museum within the village, by gathering and preserving all artifacts which illustrate the unique history of Stone City and by repairing and restoring as many of the remaining buildings as possible.

Vision Statement: By 2012, The Stone City Foundation will be engaged in museum management, tourism and preservation.  It will be selling museum tours, quarry tours and tours of the village to a customer base comprised of various tourism agencies. It expects to have a staff of 10-20 volunteers engaged in all aspects of Stone City tourism.

You are important to us and you can expect us to go the extra mile for your business.  We want your visit to Stone City to be enjoyable and memorable.
